All this rain brought back some memories for me this morning. Robin and I use to
own a VW Cabriolet, Robin affectionately referred to it as “Bluebird”.
There was one
problem with old Bluebird, when it rained, it would cut off, and wouldn’t start back up
until things dried out. It would literally leave you stuck on the side of the road. It'
really important to know what to do when you get stuck. Stuck doesn't just happen
to cars; stuck happens to marriages and relationships and emotions and behavior
and work and finances and habits and behavioral patterns and addictions. Stuck
happens to people.
One day, there came into human history a man who had this strange power to help
people get unstuck. An adulterous woman who was trapped in the guilt over her
affair and a tax collector named Zacchaeus who was a slave to greed and more and
more and more. A religious leader named Nicodemus who was just blind to his own
self-righteousness with people. A boat full of disciples just paralyzed by fear. A
Pharisee named Saul who was helpless in the face of his anger inside of him. In
every case, they couldn't free themselves, but strangely, when they bound
themselves to this man, when they abandoned their lives to God and followed this
new way of life, they found in this man, Jesus, their liberation. When they lost their
lives, they got them back.
John the Apostle, writes; (John 8:36) So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
They found this to be true. They would say these remarkable things about Jesus like,
it is for freedom that Christ has set us free, or...where the Spirit of the Lord is, there
is freedom. I want to tell you Jesus still frees people.
There is hope for change. There is hope for freedom. There is hope for healing.
Wherever you are, whatever you have done, wherever you have been, there is hope
for deliverance. The fruit comes only as we submit our lives and let the Spirit control
The Word became flesh… So let’s get some skin in the game.
